Mercado Libre Brazil purchases 46 Natural Gas trucks

Mercado Livre, one of the leading companies in e-commerce, announced that it will expand its sustainable fleet during 2021. In total, there will be 46 gas-powered trucks – compressed Biomethane and Natural Gas (CNG), by the end of this year. Eight trucks will be already circulating by the end of this month and,  the fleet will continue to grow gradually in the next months.

The new gas-powered trailers – Biomethane and CNG – emit less pollutants compared to traditional diesel-powered trucks, making the environmental impact smaller in the Free Market's logistics network, which is expanding more and more in several regions. The biomethane and CNG-powered trucks will add to the company's 51 electric cars that have been in operation since December last year, making the Free Market's journey towards greener logistics increasingly shorter.

The new gas-powered tractors on Compressed Biomethane and CNG will primarily serve the  South and Southeast of Brazil, however, the objective is to take the vehicles to all regions of the country. To make this possible, the company Mercado Livre is monitoring the supply of gas – Biomethane and CNG at stations on the main highways, enabling the expansion of the company's logistics routes.

The eight new trucks  will be allow Mercado Livre to transport, on average, 40,000 parcels per day. When the fleet is complete with the rest of the 46  CNG and biomethane vehicles, more than 230,000 parcels will be transported each day, further strengthening the fastest delivery in Brazil.

According to the senior vice president of Mercado Livre in Brazil, Fernando Yunes, the expansion of the gas-fueled fleet is linked to the company's environmental and sustainability strategy.

He says the company is aware of its environmental impact. Therefore, it aims to be increasingly cleaner, from a sustainable point of view, and also bring a greater role in gas and electric vehicles in its logistics.
