Vähälä Group, logistic company that is cooperating with Gasum (leading energy company in Finland), will take over the heavy 26 ton truck lorry powered with LNG at the turn of the year. The eight-axle Iveco semi-trailer truck will operate from January 2019 in Jyväskylä and Helsinki. It will save 50 tonnes of CO2 emission per year compared with the corresponding diesel-powered truck version.
Vähälä Group decided to invest in the LNG fleet as the company wants to offer its customers a more environmentally friendly service, get first-hand experience for the future and stay ahead of transport developments. The company strongly believes in sustainable development. “Responsibility is the most important business value for us and an essential part of our business for many of our customers as well. We want to offer them a chance for low-emission logistics, “says Ari Karjalainen,Procurement Manager at Vähälä .
Alternative fuels for heavy equipment are seen in Vähälä as a significant opportunity to meet the tightening road traffic emission standards. “In heavy traffic, the development of gas-powered LNG vehicles has been particularly interesting, although these experiences in challenging northern conditions are limited,” Karjalainen says.
Vähälä selected an Iveco Stralis NP 460.The tractor pulls a five-axle 19.6-meter long semi-trailer. The total weight of the combination is 62 tons and 23 meters long. The three-axle Stralis NP 460 is the first of its kind in Finland. According to Karjani, the combination runs daily and will total around 230,000 kilometers per year between Jyväskylä and Helsinki. “We are thrilled to look at how the LNG heavy goods vehicle behaves in a harsh way. We estimate that CO2 emissions reduction in total compared to diesel will be 50 tonnes annually. ”
LNG is the solution for heavy traffic emissions reductions
Demand for cleaner transport solutions is gaining momentum in search of solutions to tackle climate change. At present, 40 per cent of the road traffic emissions comes from distribution and heavy traffic in Finland. The strong advantage of LNG is that the NOx and particulate emissions generated by its use are very low, which is why the air quality of the cities is not affected.
An expanding gas filling station network together with new gas vehicle models creates good preconditions for growth in the gas market and emission reductions.
“Co-operation with Vähälä is a great thing. The new LNG truck is an excellent way to work more environmentally friendly for freight transport. LNG is a cleaner alternative to heavy road transport, and its popularity has been growing steadily over the last few years – and we also want to support this growth. LNG can help to achieve about 25% annual fuel savings compared with fossil diesel, “says Gasum Sales Manager Juha-Matti Koskinen .
